This moderately challenging trek takes you through beautiful landscapes of glassy lakes and thick woodland, towards the jaw-dropping Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia’s southern Colonias Peninsula. We’ll hike a little over 7.5 miles through Nathofagus woods, home to native birdlife such as Magellanic Woodpeckers, Austral parakeets and Magellan Geese. A few miles into the trek we reach the Tree-trunk Ravine, so named for the upheaval of hundreds of trees during a particularly heavy flood of the Rico Lake.

Cerro Moreno Ranch: A Pioneer’s World
Get a glimpse of the rural way of life in southern Patagonia at Cerro Moreno, a working ranch run by the charismatic Don Jorge and his family. Don Jorge has many a tale to tell, having been quite the adventurer in his youth; and in recent years has devoted himself to leading the life of a gaucho, mechanic and businessman. You’ll get the chance to meet Don Jorge and his two sons, Gustavo and Martin, to chat through their day to day lives on the ranch raising Herefood cattle, as you share a steaming pot of mate with them or watch a rodeo. This traditional ranch and its grounds are a fascinating window into an authentic way of life which has persevered in this region for many generations and still plays a key role in the livelihood of so many of the rural population to this day.
